What We Do…
Books For Kids supports the national program –
The Campaign for Grade-Level Reading
Our Efforts To Support This Program Include:
- Volunteers – Books For Kids now has over 170 people working on the Weekly Kindergarten program and/or the Monthly Program
- Mentoring
- Book Distribution

Book Donations…
Books For Kids has given over 150,000 books to young children and continues to distribute over 4000 books a month.
Read Aloud…
Our community volunteers are professionally trained to go
into schools, read to the children and engage students in a
book discussion which fosters:
- reading & listening comprehension skills
- critical thinking skills
- character development
- career education
- a love of reading & love of books
Following the reading, the students are given gift, a gift that
we all take for granted, a gift that is in our homes but not
necessarily in their homes and that is a gift of a book. This
book is brought home so that the children could begin to
build their own home libraries.
Why Do We Read To Children?
Language Development
Reading aloud exposes children to a rich variety of words and language patterns
Cognitive Development
It encourages the children to think creatively, make connections and understand cause and effect
Academic Success
Children who are read to at an early age often perform better in school
Encouraging A Love For Reading
Children are more likely to develop a life long love for books and reading
